Galveston, or Galvez' town, was named after the Spanish military and political leader, Bernardo de Galvez. Galveston's first European settlements on the were built around 1816 . The Port of Galveston was established in 1825 by the Congress of Mexico following its independence from Spain. Galveston became a major U.S. commercial center and one of the largest port, It was for a time, Texas' largest city, known as the "Queen City of the Gulf". The island was devastated by the unexpected Galveston Hurricane of 1900, whose effects included massive flooding and a storm surge which nearly wiped out the town. As you walk and drive around town you will see plaques on buildings that say they survived the storm of 1900... and of course Hurricane Ike!
The city subsequently reemerged during the Prohibition Era as a leading tourist hub and a center for illegal gambling, until this era ended in the 1950s with subsequent other economic and social development. You can still visit the pier of some of the illegal gambling action! Check out the landmark for the Balinese Room located 21st street at Seawall Blvd. Galveston Island is now a wonderful tourism town perfect for vacations of all kinds.
